It truly seems like only yesterday we were bringing our tiny bundles of joy home from the hospital, navigating those first few weeks of sleepless nights and steep learning curves. Now, in the blink of an eye, our twin babies have reached the 3-month mark, a stage filled with exciting new developments and increasingly engaging interactions.
Physically, they are making incredible progress. While on their backs, they can now confidently lift their heads off the surface and hold them steady for several minutes at a time, a remarkable display of neck and upper body strength. It's almost like they are doing little mini-pushups, building muscles for future milestones like rolling over. Their movements are also becoming more purposeful and energetic; they enthusiastically wave their arms and kick their legs, sometimes with surprising force – those kicks are getting very strong! This increased physical activity is a joy to watch, showing their growing control over their bodies.
As they become more alert and responsive, we've learned that this is a particularly sensitive time when verbal stimulation is particularly important for their developing brains. We are actively encouraging them by using a variety of words and sounds throughout the day – narrating our actions, pointing things out, singing little songs. We've read that recent research links higher intelligence levels to how many words a child hears in the first year of life, which is extra motivation to keep the conversation flowing, even if it's a one-sided chat for now!
Over the weekend, we decided to venture out and brought them to the Elements shops in West Kowloon. It was wonderful to see their reaction to a new environment. The twins were so excited and their eyes were actively looking everywhere of interest, taking in the bright lights, different shapes, and sounds around them. They were absolutely laughing when we would point to objects and identify them by name, their giggles a pure expression of their engagement and budding understanding. It was so much fun!! seeing the world through their fresh perspective and witnessing their delight in simple interactions.
We've come to understand that at this age, the twins are largely set on "receive" mode, their little brains like sponges, actively soaking up information and drawing conclusions about the world around her (them). It's fascinating to observe the subtle ways they demonstrate this learning. We notice that they respond to their own faces (or ours!) in the mirror by smiling, a clear sign of recognizing familiar forms. They will also stop sucking their thumbs or bottles to actively listen to our voices when we speak, showing they recognize the sound and are processing it. When we lean in and make noises at them, their faces light up, and they were smiling and laughing so much. This increasing responsiveness and ability to engage with us confirms that the fun has really begun. These moments of shared smiles and laughter are truly priceless, marking the beginning of more interactive communication and a deeper connection.
