In a recent conversation at
Dell Technologies World 2024, Michael Dell, CEO of Dell Technologies, and Jensen Huang, CEO and founder of NVIDIA, discussed the dawn of a new industrial revolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI). According to Huang, we are entering an era where intelligence can be manufactured at scale, transforming every aspect of computing and revolutionizing industries worldwide.
Over the past 12-14 years, significant breakthroughs in computing have paved the way for this AI-driven revolution. The transformer architecture has enabled the scaling of learning from various information sources, including text, audio, video, and even protein and amino acid sequences. Moreover, recent advancements in multimodality have allowed for translation between different modalities and the generation of new information, such as text-to-image generation or the creation of vaccines for viruses.
Modernizing Data Centers and Building AI Factories
Instead of merely producing software, we now have the ability to manufacture intelligence in the form of tokens that can be expressed in any desired information modality. This marks the first time in history that intelligence can be manufactured at scale, following previous industrial revolutions focused on the manufacturing of electricity and software.
Huang discussed the concept of an AI factory, likening it to the factories of the last Industrial Revolution that used water to produce electricity. In the current Industrial Revolution, data centers act as AI factories, transforming data and electricity into valuable data tokens distributed globally.
What has happened is instead of just producing software, we’re now producing intelligence — that intelligence is formulated in the form of tokens that can then be expressed in any information modality that we’d like it to be
The opportunity for this new industrial revolution is twofold. First, the existing trillion-dollar data center infrastructure will need to be modernized to accommodate this new form of computing. Second, a whole new class of data centers, called AI factories, will be designed specifically for manufacturing intelligence at scale. These AI factories will take in data and output tokens that can be used in various applications across industries.
Transforming Enterprises into AI Companies
For enterprises to transform into generative AI businesses, they must recognize that every company is fundamentally an intelligence manufacturer. In the future, companies will augment their biological intelligence with digital intelligence, becoming tech companies, AI companies, and intelligence manufacturing companies.
To achieve this transformation, enterprises will need to build state-of-the-art AI factories on-premises or in the cloud. Business applications will integrate large language models and API calls, with AI teams assembled to solve problems. Dell Technologies and NVIDIA have formed a partnership to deliver the first and largest generative AI go-to-market solution in history, providing enterprises with the necessary compute, networking, storage, software, and professional services to develop and deploy new AI applications.
Accelerating Innovation with the Dell AI Factory
The Dell AI Factory built on NVIDIA's accelerated computing platform is designed to harness the power of generative AI for enterprises. With a rapid pace of innovation, Dell Technologies and NVIDIA have announced seven new advancements, including the XC9680L with direct liquid cooling, which allows for 72 NVIDIA B200 Blackwell GPUs in a single rack, offering incredible density and performance.
The Future of Computing: Easy, Scalable, and Transformative
As Michael Dell and Jensen Huang reflect on their nearly 30-year collaboration, they emphasize the importance of making complex technology easy to deploy and enjoy. The partnership between Dell Technologies and NVIDIA aims to modernize the world's data centers and build AI factories for the rest of the hundred-trillion-dollar industries, launching humanity into a new phase of opportunity and potential.
The new industrial revolution, driven by the manufacturing of intelligence through AI factories, is set to transform every aspect of computing and revolutionize industries worldwide. As enterprises embrace this change and become AI companies, they will unlock unprecedented possibilities for innovation, scientific advancement, and discovery.
