But trust me, this dynamic city offers a surprising wealth of sights, from sleek modern architecture to historic landmarks, vibrant public art, and unexpected natural beauty. So, grab your camera, dust off your walking shoes, and get ready to capture the essence of San Jose!
First Light at the San Jose Museum of Art
Start your day with a dose of culture at the San Jose Museum of Art. The building itself is a photographic gem, designed by renowned architect Richard Meier. Its clean lines and expansive white stucco walls are bathed in a warm glow during the golden hour, creating a picture-perfect opportunity. As the sun dips lower in the sky, the facade transforms into a canvas of soft oranges and pinks.
The colorful sculpture in front of the museum is the "Figure Holding the Sun" by the renowned artist Italo Scanga. The sculpture is a testament to Scanga's playful and colorful style, which has been exhibited in public spaces around the world. This particular piece, with its vibrant hues and dynamic form, invites onlookers to pause and reflect on the power of creativity.
A Performing Arts Gem: The Center for the Performing Arts

This neoclassical masterpiece boasts intricate architectural details that deserve a close-up. Adjacent to the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, a poignant tribute stands in the form of a memorial flag display. The installation was inspired by San Jose’s agricultural history, the spectrum of color Adobe represents, and the freedom it offers to unleash creative potential. Each tree features a unique spectrum of color and geometry, inviting exploration and discovery, and at night, the bridge illuminates the San Jose skyline with vibrant hues.
Architectural Delights: San Jose Civic and Convention Center
No photographic tour of San Jose is complete without capturing some of its impressive architecture. The San Jose Civic, located at 1351 Saratoga Ave, is a classic example of Art Deco design, with its bold geometric shapes and intricate details. Head outdoors for a wide shot of the building, showcasing the impressive central tower and the cascading waterfall.
For a more detailed look, zoom in on the ornamental facade. Look for the sun glinting off the gold leaf accents and the intricate patterns on the concrete panels. The San Jose Convention Center, located at 150 S Market St, offers a modern contrast to the Civic. Its sleek glass facade reflects the surrounding cityscape, creating a dynamic interplay of light and color. Capture the building from a variety of angles to showcase its unique form.
Step Back in Time: Montgomery Theater and Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph
For a glimpse into San Jose's rich history, visit the Montgomery Theater, located at 142 Bellomy St. This beautifully restored landmark offers a chance to photograph its elegant interior, complete with ornate balconies, plush red velvet seating, and a gilded proscenium arch.

Explore the Tech Museum of Innovation
For the tech enthusiasts, the Tech Museum of Innovation offers a treasure trove of photographic opportunities. From interactive exhibits that come alive with vibrant lights and displays to vintage gadgets with a timeless charm, you'll find plenty to spark your creativity. Capture the awe on a child's face as they explore a giant robot, or zoom in on the intricate details of a historical computer.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Plaza de Cesar Chavez

The plaza, named after the human rights leader Cesar Chavez, is a cornerstone of the city's public gathering spaces and hosts various cultural events such as Christmas in the Park, Music in the Park, and San Jose Jazz. I noticed some new orange-color benches, umbrellas and furniture here. These enhancements were made possible through investments from the developer Jay Paul Company and are part of a broader effort to revitalize downtown San Jose. The beautification project is a clear indication of San Jose's resilience and dedication to creating experiences that bring people together.
As Mayor Matt Mahan noted, the city's downtown is experiencing the fastest rebound in California, led by such enriching experiences. Councilmember Omar Torres has also expressed plans to propose a budget for a master plan for the park, ensuring future investments and improvements while honoring the legacy of Cesar Chavez.
Urban Murals: A Burst of Color
San Jose's artistic spirit extends beyond museums and galleries. The city is home to a vibrant street art scene, with talented local artists transforming blank walls into breathtaking murals. These colorful creations not only add a touch of beauty to urban landscapes but also serve as powerful forms of social commentary and storytelling. Artist and alumna Houyee Chow (B.A., ’18) painted this one in San Jose’s Qmunity District. The district, concentrated on Post Street between South First and South Market streets, is home to restaurants, nightlife and now public art.
This is a collaboration between Empire Seven Studios, The Sobrato Organization, Digital Reality, and the SAP Center, in celebration of the venue’s 25th anniversary in 2019. Featuring the likenesses of professional ice-skating legend Kirsti Yamaguchi, the San Jose Sharks, performers Elton John + E-40, and many others.
