A Deep Dive into the Ocean at Underwater World Singapore Singapore

During our fabulous time in Singapore, we embarked on an aquatic adventure at Underwater World, located on the popular offshore island of Sentosa. Please note for those planning a current trip that Underwater World Singapore and its Dolphin Lagoon permanently closed in June 2016. The following describes our experience during a visit before its closure, a cherished memory of a now-past attraction.

Giant of the Deep Aquarium Resident
Rating: 9/10 (Subject Matter)

This photo captures the impressive form of a Japanese Spider Crab, looking like a creature straight out of a sci-fi movie or your worst arachnophobia nightmares. Posed front and center, this colossal crustacean dominates the frame with its spiky, orange-hued carapace and ridiculously long, jointed legs sprawled out across the sandy substrate. It appears to be just chilling, perhaps contemplating the meaning of existence or just waiting for a snack to scuttle by. The mood is one of quiet, submerged observation, giving the viewer a sense of encountering something ancient and alien in its natural (or perhaps, simulated natural) habitat. Its sheer size and bizarre anatomy make it a fascinating subject, scoring high marks purely on the 'wow' factor alone.

From a photography standpoint, this shot navigates the tricky world of aquarium photography reasonably well. The composition places the main subject prominently, allowing the viewer to appreciate its full, gangly glory. The use of light highlights the texture on the crab's shell and legs, though it does create some noticeable shadows, particularly beneath its body and in the rocky background. The color palette is earthy, dominated by the warm orange of the crab contrasting with the muted browns and greys of the rocks and the speckled white sand. While the background is a bit busy and dark, it serves to isolate the crab effectively. Capturing sharp detail on such a large, potentially slow-moving creature in a low-light environment is a win, though there might be a slight bit of motion blur on the leg in the far background (or maybe that's just another crab trying to sneak away). The inclusion of the signature "Preston Lau PHOTOGRAPHY" adds a nice touch, crediting the artist who bravely faced this eight-legged (well, ten-legged with claws, but who's counting?) giant.

Title: Face to Face with the King
Rating: 9/10

Well, hello there, nightmare fuel! This extreme close-up gives us an intimate look at the face of a King Crab, rated a solid 9 out of 10 for pure, unadulterated fascinating subject matter and potential terror. The composition is spot on, focusing tightly on the crab's multiple beady blue eyes and intricate, spiky mouthparts, making it feel like it's peering right through the lens (and possibly into your soul). There's not much action happening, just a crustacean posing stoically, perhaps contemplating the existential dread of being delicious. The mood is intense and alien, thanks to the sheer detail and strange form. Lighting is key here, highlighting the gnarly textures of the carapace and casting subtle shadows that add depth and drama to its already intimidating visage.

The color palette is wonderfully rich, with fiery oranges, reds, and browns dominating the crab's shell, providing a stark and beautiful contrast against the cool, blurry blues and greens of the background, which hints at a deep, mysterious underwater (or aquarium) world. The photographic style leans heavily into macro-like detail, allowing us to appreciate the bizarre anatomy up close – those little white-tipped appendages near the mouth look like tiny alien hands. While the subject matter is inherently captivating, the focus is sharp where it needs to be, capturing the glint in the eyes and the sharpness of the spines. It's a compelling portrait of a creature that looks like it belongs on another planet, captured with skill that balances the raw visual impact with technical precision. The subtle watermark in the corner serves as a reminder of the photographer's brave encounter with this magnificent, spiky beast.

Underwater World, which opened in 1991, was a fascinating oceanarium that took visitors on a journey beneath the waves. Home to over 2,500 marine animals spanning 250 species from various regions of the world, it offered a comprehensive look at marine biodiversity. Much of the oceanarium was located underground, which added to the immersive feeling of being in the deep sea.

Aquarium Commute
Subject Rating: 7/10

This vibrant image captures a bustling scene within a large aquarium, depicting a diverse collection of tropical fish navigating a rocky and coral-laden environment. It feels like peak hour for these finned commuters, with various species swimming in different directions, some darting purposefully while others seem to be casually cruising. The mood is lively and dynamic, showcasing the constant activity of this underwater world. You can spot everything from striped tangs and triggerfish to bright yellow tangs and the iconic blue tang, all sharing the same space, making it a colorful snapshot of marine community life. The background features intricate rocky structures covered in algae and patches of lighter coral growth, providing a complex and textured stage for the aquatic drama unfolding.

From a photographic perspective, capturing such a busy scene with multiple moving subjects is always a challenge, and this image successfully conveys the energy. The composition is dense, perhaps leaning into the chaos of tank life rather than focusing on a single subject, which adds to the sense of being immersed in the environment. Lighting appears naturalistic, illuminating the vivid colors of the fish beautifully while also creating some depth and shadow among the rocks and coral. The focus seems to be distributed, with some fish sharp and others softer as they move in and out of the plane of focus – a common hurdle in this kind of shooting. The color saturation is excellent, making the blues, yellows, and stripes really pop against the more muted background, though perhaps a tighter depth of field focusing on a key group could have isolated subjects better. And yes, there's a watermark reminding us who froze this chaotic moment in time.

Title: The Radioactive Deep-Sea Terror
Rating: 7/10

Dive into a scene that looks straight out of a 1950s creature feature! Our subject, a Great White Shark (7/10 for accuracy, 10/10 for glow-factor), is presented here not in its usual pearly white glory, but bathed in an intense, almost radioactive green light. It's caught mid-chomp, looking rather displeased, perhaps because someone stole its Lucky Charms. The mood is undeniably dramatic and spooky, leaning towards campy horror thanks to that unnatural glow. You can almost hear the theremin music playing. The text "GREAT WHITE SHARK" is faintly visible below, just in case the glowing, toothy apparition wasn't clear enough.

From a photographic perspective, this shot plays heavily on contrast. The dark, textured foreground and netting create a claustrophobic frame, making you feel like you're peering into a hidden, dangerous world – or perhaps just through a slightly dusty exhibit window. The lighting is the star (or villain) here, with the intense green projection overwhelming the scene, creating dramatic highlights and lens flares that add to the otherworldly effect. The background is tantalizingly obscured by the darkness and light bloom, hinting at informational panels or other wonders behind the glowing beast. While the color palette is dominated by the neon green, the subtle browns, blacks, and faint blues of the environment provide necessary grounding. It's a bold, albeit slightly bizarre, take on showcasing a marine predator in what appears to be a museum or aquarium exhibit.

One of the absolute highlights of our visit was the opportunity to participate in interactive feeding sessions. The kids particularly loved the chance to feed gentle rays and smaller sharks from a designated area, a thrilling yet safe way to get up close to these incredible creatures and feel their unique textures.

Title: Guardian of the Deep (Blue Steel Edition)
Rating: 8.5/10

This underwater shot captures a majestic shark cruising through shafts of sunlight filtering down from the surface, a subject we'll rate a cool 9/10 for its inherent awesomeness and sleek design. The shark glides from lower left towards the upper right, its profile sharp against the slightly murky, dark blue background. A smaller fish darts in the upper part of the frame, adding a sense of scale and movement. The overall mood is serene yet powerful, evoking the quiet wonder of the underwater world. The composition places the shark dynamically, using the diagonal line of its body to lead the eye through the frame, while the bright rays of light create a natural spotlight effect, drawing attention to the main subject. The foreground shows the darker, textured ocean floor, fading into the deep blue.

From a photography standpoint, the lighting is the star here, with the dramatic God rays adding a touch of magic, though exposing correctly for both the bright highlights and the dark shadows must have been tricky – perhaps a touch more detail could be recovered in the darker areas? The color palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, punctuated by the shark's pale underside and distinctive dark markings, giving it a classic underwater look. The sharpness is good on the shark's head and body, though the depth of field seems a bit shallow, leaving the background fish slightly soft. This photo effectively captures the subject in its environment, using natural light to create a captivating scene that screams "professional aquarium visit!" or perhaps "brave soul with an underwater camera." Honestly, trying to get a shark to pose like this? 10/10 for effort (and maybe a dash of adrenaline).

The Grumpy Giant of the Deep Blue (Tank)

Subject Rating: 8/10

Behold, the undisputed ruler of this particular aquatic domain – a massive, mottled behemoth looking suspiciously like it just stubbed its fin. With a perpetual frown fixed upon its face, this impressive specimen dominates the foreground, its speckled hide catching the ambient aquarium light. It seems to be contemplating the meaning of fish existence, or perhaps just waiting for its next meal ticket. In the background, a flurry of smaller fish and even a couple of sleek sharks add a sense of scale and activity, reminding us that even the king of the tank has subjects (or potential snacks?) swimming nearby. The overall mood is one of tranquil observation, punctuated by the sheer imposing presence of our spotted friend in its deep blue habitat, where the water seems to stretch into a blurry, dark expanse.

From a photographic perspective, this shot is all about capturing that imposing subject. The composition places the giant fish front and center, using its bulk to fill the frame and draw the eye directly to its wonderfully textured and spotty form. Lighting, a notorious challenge in aquariums, is handled reasonably well here, highlighting the details on the fish's skin despite the typical diffused blue environment. While the background is a bit blurry (selective focus doing its job!), it provides essential context, showing the depth of the tank and the cohabitation with other species like the sharks resting on the substrate. The muted blues and grays are broken up nicely by the unique pattern on the main subject, creating visual interest. It's a solid capture of a striking creature, proving that even grumpy-looking fish can be photogenic icons of the underwater world. The photographer's signature subtly marks the corner, just ensuring credit is given where it's due for this portrait of aquatic angst.

The main event for many visitors was the 83-meter long underwater corridor. Stepping onto a moving travelator, you were transported through a clear acrylic tunnel that ran through a massive aquarium tank. This created the incredible sensation of walking on the seabed, with majestic rays gliding effortlessly overhead and various species of sharks swimming alongside and all around you. Shoals of fish darted through the water, and the sheer scale of the tank and the diversity of marine life visible from the tunnel was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the underwater world.

Anemone Hotel High Life
9/10

Welcome to the bustling underwater metropolis, where the real estate is prime anemone property! This excellent capture showcases a couple of bold Ocellaris clownfish navigating their sticky home, offering a glimpse into their surprisingly complex social lives (mostly involving ignoring everyone else). The mood is one of serene, vibrant underwater life, punctuated by the curious, almost alien forms of the green brittle stars or worms snaking across the foreground rocks. It's a classic scene from a well-maintained aquarium, bursting with color and intriguing textures, making you want to pull up a tiny coral stool and just watch the drama unfold.

From a photographer's perspective, this shot absolutely nails the essentials. Compositionally, the large anemone anchors the left side, balanced by the intricate rock structure providing a dark, dramatic backdrop and framing the clownfish. The lighting from above creates wonderful highlights on the anemone tentacles and the spiny bodies of the brittle stars, adding crucial texture and depth while casting soft shadows that enhance the scene's dimensionality. The color palette is incredibly rich – the deep blues, vivid purples, creamy greens, and contrasting black and white of the fish all pop beautifully, demonstrating excellent color saturation. Capturing these fast-moving subjects clearly while maintaining focus on the surroundings is a skill, and this image achieves it with flair, giving us a sharp, detailed window into this miniature ecosystem.

Leafy Seadragon: The Ocean's Most Elaborate Drifter

Rating: 10/10 (For the creature, absolutely, and the photographer for capturing its fabulousness)

Well, look at this guy! It's a Leafy Seadragon, drifting through a vibrant blue abyss looking like he's just stepped out of an underwater fashion show sponsored by the kelp forest. What's happening here? Not a whole lot, which is precisely the point with these masters of disguise; they sway gently, pretending to be unassuming seaweed while probably judging your land-based fashion choices. The mood is serene, almost otherworldly, capturing the quiet magic of this creature's existence. The subject matter itself is a gold mine for any photographer – a bizarrely beautiful animal that defies easy description. The deep, consistent blue background is crucial here, acting as the perfect canvas to showcase the seadragon's incredible form without any visual clutter.

From a photography standpoint, this image is quite effective. The composition places the seadragon nicely in the frame, diagonal flow adding dynamic interest without disrupting the calm mood. Lighting appears soft but directional, highlighting the delicate, translucent nature of the leafy appendages and the ribbed body structure. The colors are rich and saturated – the warm yellows, oranges, and browns of the seadragon pop gloriously against the cool blue. Capturing such detail and clarity on a creature that essentially *is* camouflage, likely in the potentially tricky environment of an aquarium (hello, reflections!), is a solid effort. It’s a great example of letting a truly spectacular subject shine, using technical skills to isolate it and present its unique beauty effectively.

Admission to Underwater World also included entry to the Dolphin Lagoon, situated at Palawan Beach on Sentosa. This was home to a group of animals, including fur seals and Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins. These dolphins are sometimes referred to as "pink dolphins" due to the unique pinkish hue their skin can develop, particularly as they age, although they are naturally grey. At the Dolphin Lagoon, we were able to watch live performances showcasing the intelligence and agility of the fur seals and these beautiful pink dolphins. The shows often involved impressive jumps, flips, and interactions with their trainers, set against the backdrop of the beach. Beyond the shows, Dolphin Lagoon also offered programs that allowed for closer interactions with the dolphins, although we primarily enjoyed watching their performances.

Title: The Boy and His Sentient Hat
Subject Rating: 9/10

This delightful image captures a young boy sporting perhaps the world's largest, most characterful hat – a whimsical grey piece adorned with a wide, knowing eye that seems to peer into the soul, or at least wonder why it's balancing on this particular head. The boy, in a vibrant blue t-shirt that partially reveals the text "shooting St," is looking downwards with a shy smile, perhaps contemplating the sheer volume of his headwear or interacting with something just out of frame. The mood is undeniably playful and innocent, emphasizing the simple joys of childhood and dressing up, with a blurry background suggesting a lively indoor setting, complete with snippets of other attendees and potentially some bright, furry accessories like the pink one peeking from behind.

From a photography standpoint, the shot uses a tight crop and a slightly low angle, which really emphasizes the imposing scale of the hat and the boy's small stature beneath it. The shallow depth of field is effectively employed to isolate the main subject, rendering the background into pleasant, soft shapes, although the blurry pink object does add a touch of visual intrigue (or mild distraction, depending on your view). The lighting is soft and even, beautifully illuminating the boy's face and the texture of the hat without harsh shadows. While the hat undeniably dominates the frame, the photographer has managed to capture a genuinely sweet expression from the boy, which is the real heart of the image. It's a charming example of capturing personality and fun, even if the main star is technically an accessory.

A Colony of Stripes

Subject Rating: 8/10

Behold the charming yet slightly bewildered gazes of a group of garden eels, poking their striped bodies out of the sandy seafloor like nautical periscopes. These aren't your average slippery customers; they're more like perpetually surprised residents of a sand dune housing development. The scene is calm and curious, a peek into the unassuming life of these bottom-dwellers as they gently sway in the unseen currents, perhaps gossiping about the latest plankton drift or judging that one eel in the back who's slightly off-kilter. The background transitions from the pale, speckled sand to a deep, calming blue, creating a simple yet effective backdrop for the main subjects. It's a serene moment captured in an underwater world, reminding us that even the simplest creatures have their own fascinating rhythm.

From a photographic standpoint, this shot masterfully employs a shallow depth of field to isolate the main subject – the prominently striped eel in the foreground – against a pleasantly blurred background. The composition, with the main eel angling diagonally across the frame, adds dynamic energy without being distracting, though perhaps adhering to the rule of thirds a tad more strictly could have enhanced it further. The lighting appears natural for an aquarium setting, providing soft illumination that highlights the vibrant yellow and white stripes of the eels and the texture of the sand without harsh shadows. The color contrast between the warm tones of the eels and the cool blues of the water is visually appealing. The focus is sharp on the lead eel's head and body, capturing the delicate details of its fins and surprisingly expressive eyes. The overall style leans towards a naturalistic macro approach, focusing on the fascinating patterns and behaviors of the subjects.

Aquarium Intrigue
Subject Rating: 9/10

Two young explorers are captivated by the watery world before them, seemingly engrossed in an exhibit at an aquarium or similar attraction. On the left, a boy in a bright blue shirt holds a small, nondescript object between his fingers, poised to introduce it to the water, his gaze fixed intently below the surface. Beside him, a girl in a patterned dress leans in, her eyes wide and mouth slightly open in a look of focused wonder and curiosity. The mood is one of innocent discovery and shared excitement, perfectly capturing the fascination children feel when interacting with new environments. The foreground is dominated by the side of the water tank, its clear surface dotted with water droplets and reflections, adding a dynamic texture that partially obscures the view into the tank but also frames the children beautifully.

The composition cleverly uses the tank's edge as a visual barrier and leading line, directing attention towards the interaction unfolding above and within it. Lighting appears soft and even, likely ambient light highlighting the sheen on the water and the expressions on the children's faces. The deep, blurry blue background simplifies the scene, ensuring the subjects remain the clear focal point. The vibrant color of the boy's shirt and the girl's cheerful dress contrast nicely with the cool blues and the metallic grey edge of the tank. The image style feels candid and observational, capturing a genuine moment of engagement. While the object in the boy's hand remains a mystery – perhaps food provided by the exhibit, or just a particularly interesting pebble – the focus is undeniably on the children's reactions and the simple magic of the moment. Note the water droplets create a delightful, almost abstract layer over the lower part of the image.

Underwater World was also involved in valuable environmental and educational initiatives, such as the Living in the Ocean Programme, Ocean Ambassador Programme, and the Coral Club. These programs highlighted the importance of marine conservation and aimed to educate visitors, particularly younger ones, about the fragility of ocean ecosystems and the need to protect marine life.

Singapore Souvenir Spectacle
Subject Rating: 7/10 (For capturing the essence of impulse buys near the aquarium exit)

Alright, let's dive into this... magnet. Our star subject, rated a solid 7/10 for bravely portraying underwater life on a tiny piece of plastic, is a classic souvenir fridge magnet from Underwater World Singapore. The composition here is a tight close-up, giving us an almost disturbingly intimate look at these brightly colored, slightly surprised-looking clownfish nestled among some remarkably vibrant blue and green seaweed. The deep blue background suggests the vast ocean, or maybe just a poorly lit fish tank. The text "UNDERWATER WORLD Singapore" is proudly displayed at the bottom, leaving no ambiguity about where your disposable income went. The colors are, shall we say, enthusiastic – everything is popping with a synthetic joy that only injection-molded plastic can provide.

From a technical standpoint, the lighting is doing its best to highlight the raised contours of this aquatic diorama, creating some nice shadows that give the flat design a surprising amount of dimension. See how the light catches the edges of the text and the fish? Chef's kiss for product texture definition! The shallow depth of field effectively blurs the background into a non-descript brown void, wisely keeping our attention firmly on the plastic inhabitants of this miniature ocean. It's a straightforward, almost documentary-style capture of a common object – a testament to the photographer's ability to make even a humble magnet look... well, like a magnet, but a well-lit one. The mood is purely "I went on holiday and all I got was this fantastic piece of magnetized resin." Preston Lau's watermark adds a touch of class, proving that even souvenirs deserve professional documentation.

Dolphin's Dinner Date

Subject Rating: 8/10

This shot perfectly captures a moment of anticipation at what looks like a marine park. Front and center, a man in a snappy blue polo shirt and some truly eye-catching striped shorts is poised to deliver a tasty fish snack to a surfacing pink dolphin. The dolphin, looking surprisingly serene, has its head out of the water, ready for its meal. To the left, a group of onlookers, including a couple of kids with expressions ranging from curious to slightly bored, are watching the show from behind a protective metal rail and yellow barriers. A bright blue cooler box sits by the edge of the pool, presumably holding the rest of the aquatic banquet. The mood is one of casual observation and perhaps a touch of wonder at getting up close to such a unique creature, despite the slightly commercial setting suggested by the barriers and crowd.

From a photographic standpoint, this image nails the key interaction, but faces a few typical challenges of shooting in bright daylight. The composition feels a bit crowded, with the metal rail cutting across the foreground and the dolphin positioned rather low and left. While it captures the action, a slightly wider frame or different angle might have allowed for more breathing room and a better balance of elements. The lighting is quite harsh, casting strong shadows, especially on the faces of the children, making them look a bit gloomy – perhaps the sun wasn't feeling the pink dolphin's vibe that day. However, the colours are vibrant, with the striking pink of the dolphin providing a lovely contrast against the bright blue pool liner and the feeder's shirt. It's a classic candid shot of a moment at a public attraction, more focused on documenting the scene than achieving technical perfection, giving it a relatable, snapshot-like quality, complete with a subtle photographer's watermark claiming the moment.

Overall, we had a truly fabulous time during our visit to Singapore. Exploring attractions like Underwater World, with its immersive tunnel and memorable animal encounters, was just one part of a trip that left us feeling like we still had so much more to do and see. Singapore is a city with incredible variety, from its natural spaces and wildlife parks to its vibrant culture and culinary scene. We will definitely be going back for a longer stay next time to experience everything else this dynamic city has to offer.

Seal of Approval

Subject Rating: 9/10

This stunning portrait captures a rather regal-looking seal, possibly enjoying a moment of profound contemplation or maybe just trying to dry off in the sun. The subject is rendered in exquisite detail, showcasing the rich, dark brown and black wet fur with striking patterns and textures, highlighted beautifully by the light. Its eyes are closed, adding to a serene and relaxed mood, while its prominent white whiskers fan out like delicate antennas reaching for answers from the sky. The vibrant, yet softly blurred, aqua blue background provides a lovely contrast, hinting at a pool or ocean setting, giving the impression that this magnificent creature is just taking a break from aquatic adventures on a warm, bright day. You can almost hear the seal thinking, "Ah, this sun feels *amazing* on my freshly washed coat."

From a photographic standpoint, this is a well-executed shot. The composition places the seal off-center, following the rule of thirds, with its gaze leading into the empty space of the frame, which works effectively for a profile shot. The lighting is particularly effective, creating specular highlights on the wet fur that define its texture and form. The shallow depth of field beautifully isolates the subject from the background, making the seal pop and preventing distractions – a wise choice unless you *really* wanted to capture the intricacies of pool tile. The color palette is simple but impactful, relying on the contrast between the warm, dark tones of the seal and the cool blues of the water. The focus is sharp on the subject, right down to the individual strands of fur and whiskers, which is exactly what you want when you're trying to capture the essence of a damp, philosophical pinniped. This image successfully blends technical skill with a captivating subject, proving that even a simple pose can make for a compelling photograph, provided you catch the light just right and the model doesn't suddenly decide to scratch its ear with a flipper.

Title: Aquatic Slam Dunk!
Rating: 9/10

Okay, first off, a pink dolphin? Balancing a basketball? Subject matter is already a solid 9/10 just for being so delightfully unexpected and showcasing skills most land mammals (including myself) could only dream of. Here we have a truly unique moment captured: a gorgeous, speckled pink dolphin in a pool, demonstrating its impressive ability to keep a regulation-size basketball perfectly perched on the tip of its rostrum. The mood is undeniably playful and showcases the animal's remarkable intelligence and training. It looks like this aquatic athlete is ready to challenge LeBron James to a friendly game of H.O.R.S.E. The vibrant orange ball pops against the cool teal water, and the dolphin's expression seems almost proud of its feat.

From a photography perspective, the shot is clean and well-executed, focusing squarely on the star performer. The composition centers the action, which works effectively given the strong subject and the dramatic pose. The lighting seems natural and even, beautifully illuminating the dolphin's unique pink hue and the texture of the basketball without harsh shadows. The colors are pleasing – the contrasting teal of the pool water and the warmth of the ball and dolphin create a visually appealing image. The background is simple, showing the pool edge and water surface, which helps keep the viewer's attention focused entirely on the dolphin and its amazing trick. It's a clear peak-action shot, capturing the balance at what appears to be its most stable point. My only minor critique? Maybe slightly more water around the edges could enhance the environment, but frankly, when you've got a pink dolphin doing this, you frame the darn dolphin! Nicely done, Preston Lau Photography (as the signature indicates) – capturing this moment must have been a splash!
