A Nautical Journey Through Fantasy at Tokyo DisneySea in Tokyo Japan April 2014
Our second day in the Tokyo area was dedicated to exploring the truly unique and breathtaking Tokyo DisneySea (東京ディズニーシー). Located in Urayasu, Chiba, as part of the larger Tokyo Disney Resort, this 176-acre theme park stands apart from other Disney parks with its overarching theme of nautical exploration and adventure. Opened on September 4, 2001, and owned by The Oriental Land Company under license from The Walt Disney Company, DisneySea is the second theme park at the Tokyo Disney Resort and holds the distinction of being the ninth Disney park to open worldwide.
The park is divided into seven uniquely themed areas, or "ports of call," each with its own distinct atmosphere and attractions. The grand entrance to the park is the stunning Mediterranean Harbor, designed to recreate the charm and romance of an Italian port city. The attention to detail here is incredible, with picturesque buildings, waterfront promenades, and even authentic-looking canals. A highlight of Mediterranean Harbor is the chance to board and ride Venetian Gondolas, gliding through the waterways and offering lovely views of the port – a truly idyllic experience.
Mediterranean Harbor also serves as the stage for spectacular water-based shows. During our visit in 2014, we were able to witness The Legend of Mythica, a vibrant 25-minute show that celebrated the myths and legends of the sea through elaborate floats, music, and costumed performers on the harbor waters. As evening fell, the harbor transformed for Fantasmic!, a breathtaking nighttime spectacular that premiered on April 28, 2011, as part of the park's 10th-anniversary celebration, "Be Magical!". This incredible show utilized special barges on the water, dazzling fountains, powerful pyro effects, beloved Disney Characters, and stunning fireworks to tell a story of imagination and dreams, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the park.
Venturing out from Mediterranean Harbor, we explored six more nautically themed ports. Our daughter was absolutely captivated by Mermaid Lagoon, an enchanting area themed entirely around the characters and world of Disney's The Little Mermaid. The exterior facade is designed to look like the majestic Palace of King Triton, featuring fanciful, undulating architecture inspired by seashells. Stepping inside Mermaid Lagoon feels like diving underwater – the area is mostly indoors and illuminated with cool, ethereal lighting in shades of blue and green, creating a magical, submerged atmosphere. This land is home to several meticulously themed children's rides, including the gentle Flounder's Flying Fish Coaster, the spinning Scuttle's Scooters and Blowfish Balloon Race, and the bobbing Jumpin' Jellyfish, all designed with younger guests in mind and perfectly integrated into the whimsical underwater environment. There is also The Whirlpool, another spinning ride themed to kelp cups.
Another port we particularly enjoyed was the Arabian Coast. This exotic and adventurous land is beautifully themed after another Disney animated classic, Aladdin. It vividly recreates the atmosphere of an Arabian harbor combined with the enchanted world from 1001 Arabian Nights. The architecture features intricate details, vibrant colors, and soaring minarets, transporting you to a land of magic carpets and genies. Arabian Coast boasts three main attractions. Sindbad's Storybook Voyage is a wonderfully detailed indoor boat ride, often compared to "it's a small world" for its charming boat journey through various scenes. However, this ride tells the epic tales of Sindbad the Sailor and his adorable tiger cub companion, Chandu, featuring an impressive number of Audio-Animatronics and a memorable theme song, "Compass of Your Heart," composed by Alan Menken. We also enjoyed the magnificent Caravan Carousel, a stunning double-decker carousel that can accommodate over 190 passengers, adorned with beautifully sculpted Arabian-inspired horses and other creatures, offering lovely views of the land from the upper level. The Magic Lamp Theater, a 3D show featuring a live performer and the Genie, is also a highlight.
The other ports of call we didn't spend as much time in but are part of the park's diverse offerings include the mysterious Mysterious Island, themed around the world of Jules Verne and featuring the park's iconic Mount Prometheus volcano; the retro-futuristic Port Discovery; the adventurous Lost River Delta, home to ancient ruins; and the nostalgic American Waterfront, recreating different areas of the northeastern United States in the early 20th century.
Beyond the attractions and shows, Tokyo DisneySea is renowned for its exceptional themed food and merchandise. Each port offers unique culinary delights and exclusive souvenirs that are intricately tied to the land's theme, allowing you to extend the immersive experience even after you leave an area. From savory snacks to elaborate meals and charming character goods, the attention to detail is present in every aspect.
Overall, our day at Tokyo DisneySea was a truly magical and very enjoyable day. The park's unique themeing, incredible attention to detail in its architecture and environments, diverse range of attractions and shows, and the opportunity to explore different "ports of call" made it a standout experience. We left satisfied, filled with wonderful memories of our nautical journey through fantasy and adventure.
